Chapter 6

Yes, Dad looked surprised. But me? Only for a millisecond, and then the world’s biggest smile leaped onto my face. I couldn’t stop it. This was my very own dad sitting in front of me. My father. My papa, daddy, old man, pop, sire…

“Evy?”

Unbelievably, my grin grew wider. My face felt like it was going to break. “Yeah, it’s me. And you’re my dad,” I said, sounding brilliant. “I mean...” How embarrassing. “You are my dad, aren’t you?”

And finally, he smiled. “I am.”

“Cool.”

Suddenly my hands seemed like two massive hams dangling from the end of my arms, far too big to not be noticed by everyone within a hundred mile radius. Thankfully, Dad didn’t seem to notice. Deftly, he wheeled his chair beside the couch. “Come sit down. Let me see you.”

I almost skipped to his side. About halfway there, I thought that maybe I was acting too goofy. Of course the first solution to pop into my head was that I should act more like my sister, and I almost laughed out loud. But telling myself to act like Jen – without any storming in and out of rooms, that is – somehow helped me control my face-splitting grin. With as much decorum as possible, I sat on the couch, glancing at Mom as I did so. She still hadn’t turned around, but she didn’t look as stiff, and I could tell she was listening to us.

“I can’t believe you’re really here,” said Dad, staring at me. His eyes looked a lot like mine, a lot like Jen’s. “After so many years of searching, I’d almost given up. Where were you? Why didn’t you come years ago?”

“We thought you were dead,” I said, focussing on the second question.

His eyes narrowed, then he looked at Mom’s back. “Dead? You told her I was dead? Just because of…” He stopped, bit his lip. “I thought you were a better person than that.”

Mom lowered her head and shielded her eyes with one hand. Her shoulders shook. She was crying.

This was not going well – and he was the one with the evil mother, not me.

“You don’t understand. Mom really thought you were dead. She only found out last spring that you were alive, and had to, I don’t know, get used to the idea before telling me?” He didn’t need to know I didn’t find out from Mom, and that if it was up to her, I probably still wouldn’t know.

“She thought I was dead? I don’t understand.”

Mom continued to stand with her back to us; she obviously wasn’t into giving him an explanation.

“Okay, this is what happened,” I said. Someone had to get this stuff out there, someone who wasn’t so hurt that they couldn’t even speak. “After the accident when Mom woke up in the hospital, Grandmother told her you were dead. Then she said they wanted me. She offered Mom lots of money and when Mom refused to give me up, Grandmother said they’d take her to court and convince everyone she was an unfit mother to win custody.
